Singapore’s largest outdoor performing arts festival turns 10 this year, and the team behind it is pulling out all the stops with the celebrations. Not that they never do, but this year, the Singapore Night Festival (SNF) 2017 changes things up a little as they reminisce past editions by bringing back previous crowd favourites and rekindling the romance and beauty of night lights and exhilarating performances along with fresh additions to the itinerary.
This year, the Night Lights will commence on the 18th of August and run through the nine nights of the Festival, which means, more time to admire the stunning installations and hopefully, lesser crowds to jostle with.
Skincare brand, Aesop, is also offering visitors a scent experience titled, Nostos: Records of the Self in light of the Festival’s 10th anniversary. Inspired by the Greek word ‘nostos’, meaning homecoming and paired with ‘algos’ to form the word ‘nostalgia’, a feeling for which scent is an evocative trigger. Visitors will be using their noses to navigate the space and imprint the aroma to memory.
To commemorate their 10th edition, SNF 2017 welcomes back 10 homecoming artists who’ve grown with the Festival over the years, some familiar names are Bloco Singapura who’d performed at the inaugural edition back in 2008, Timbre Music, ZingO Festival Drum Group and Peranakan Sayang, Singapore’s premier Peranakan performing group. Performances will be held on the evenings of 24, 25 and 26 August.
Just like all its precedent editions, SNF 2017 will once again be blessing our senses with a stellar array of sights and experiences. Local artist, Joo Choon Lin continues her exploration of the materiality of the human body and the mystery of emotions with another addition to her three part series work, The Blinking Organisms – You SPLEEN Me’ Round.
Les Hommes Debout (The Standing Men) by AADN features The Standing Men calling out and initiating a dialogue with unknowing passersby as they come to life with colours, lights and the recorded voices of the inhabitants in Bras Basah.Bugis precinct.
And, what’s a festival without food? The Festival Village has got your back with specially curated epicurean and shopping experiences with over 30 flea market and food and beverage stalls to boot. Pair that with musical performances and pro-wrestling shows by Grapple Max Dojo, the Festival Village is definitely not to be missed. Do keep a lookout for the KopiFolks for all the must-get noms at the Festival Village.
And if simply strolling along the dazzling streets of the Festival is much too mundane for you, Hello, Bicycle! are renting out their bikes for free! So feel free to grab one, or better yet, bring your own bicycle and whizz through the Night Lights in a breeze.
